Waratah found their kicking boots as the game wore on to pile on the points against a Palmerston side that brought plenty of fight.

Tahs were inaccurate early, but they eventually took control in the muddy affair at Gardens Oval to build momentum into finals.

The weight of chances their midfield created on their home deck eventually broke the game open as they marched to an 18.15 (123) to 7.4 (46) win.

It was a much-needed win after recent close defeats to other sides bound for finals, each of which the Warriors were in the contest only to fall away late.

Waratah were stronger out of the midfield feeding off the ruck work of big man Arnold Kirby and finding roads forward from the possessions of Scott Carlin and Ricky Monti.

Despite dominating key parts of the contest, particularly out of the middle, Waratah were inaccurate in front of the posts.

Their ability to move out of the middle, spurred on by some big Scott Carlin possessions, created plenty of chances at goal, but many went begging.

Liam Odea was first to slot the ball through the big sticks, but it was the only major the home side would score in the opening quarter as the Magpies found momentum of their own.

Palmerston’s young guns Nathaniel Lampton and Deacon Summerville were constant ball threats spurred on by their more experienced teammates Shaun Wilson and Patrick Heenan.

Those counters from Waratah miskicks allowed Palmerston to build a score of their own off the boot of Ryan Warfe and Terry Kathopoulis.

Waratah eventually broke their run of inefficiencies with the weight of chances taking hold allowing the side to push their advantage.

Brodie Carroll was a particular threat at goal scoring four majors inspiring a resumed accuracy and confidence in his side.

Lachlan Wilson and Joel Hillis both got plenty of the action through the middle too alongside their fellow midfield suspects as Waratah’s lead grew with every quarter.

Importantly for Tahs their best period was the fourth quarter, a period they’ve lacked in during recent matches, scoring seven goals while the influence of Kirby grew in the ruck.

“It’s going pretty good at the moment, we’ve had a couple of close losses in the past few weeks where only a couple of 10 minute patches cost us,” Kirby said.

“We’ve played some good footy but it’s about composure where we sometimes rely on a couple of guys to take charge, where the whole team can do that and slow the game down to get us on track.

“Our midfield was crucial again in this match, and it is in any game particularly against the top teams, it plays a really key role in how we succeed and they were all great today.

“Next we have Buffs and we’re focused on getting momentum rolling after those losses heading into finals and hopefully we play off in a grand final in a month’s time.”

PREVIEW

Waratah have suffered three agonisingly tight defeats against their finals bound foes since the Christmas break.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 7pm on Saturday.

The Tahs recent form has seen them drop from second place to fifth and while finals are still on the agenda, their chances of a double chance are slim.

They’ve been in the contest each match, leading Districts for the majority, but have fallen apart in the final 10 minutes.

Accuracy inside 50 was another issue, even in their win against Wanderers, and is an area they will want to clean up in order to push back into the upper echelon.

Though there are a couple of factors in their favour including some great midfielders in Tanner Lovell and Scott Carlin, who have had a great impact, and a run in including the bottom two.

Palmerston fell to bottom spot last week after their loss to the Darwin Buffaloes, but this is a young side in need of time to grow.

Nathaniel Lampton has impressed in recent weeks while the likes of Nayef Hamad and Tristen Waack were among the best on field last round.

For the Magpies it’s a case of needing time to put it all together and as with so many sides, now it’s not about finals but a strong finish to the season.

The full match replay will be available at the conclusion of the game.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
