St Mary’s midfield ace Dylan Landt and Darwin Buffettes star ruck Molly Althouse claimed the 2022-23 Nichols Medal top honours at the NTFL night of nights.
Midfield ace and goal kicking dynamo Landt capped off another big season for St Mary’s with his first Nichols medal.
In some respects it would have been a bittersweet moment for the star performer winning the medal a night after his side was knocked out by Southern Districts in the prelim final.
However, the man who has also plied his trade at the Calder Cannons and in the Essendon VFL team, has been the catalyst for a lot of Saints success since joining the club in the 2020-21 season.
Landt polled 23 votes, after finishing the season with an average of 29 disposals per match, to take out the medal.
“It’s a big honour, hasn’t quite sunk in just yet, but I’m pretty proud,” Landt said.
“Going down in the prelim final wasn’t the plan, but it’s been a pretty good, consistent year and we’ve learned a bit which will help us go better next year.
“I’d just like to thank the whole club, it’s an amazing club, it’s been an amazing three years and the coaching staff have been great to me.
“I wouldn’t be able to do this without them and the volunteers that put time and effort into the club.
“I’ve fell in love with the club and the people, I’m committed to the club for a long, long time and we’ve hopefully got many more premierships to win.”
He finished eight votes ahead of Districts’ ruckman Matthew Dennis, and 10 votes ahead of Waratah vice-captain Dylan Collis.
In the women’s competition it was Althouse who shone the brightest winning her second Women’s Premier League Best and Fairest in as many years.
The ruck enjoyed another dominant season, after coming off a spell with the Cairns City Lions in the NTFL off-season.
And though her Darwin Buffettes are no longer in the running to protect their premiership Althouse was once again among her side’s best.
The born and bred Territorian polled 28 votes from 16 matches, eight more than her total last season, and became just the third NTFL women’s player to win in back-to-back years.
“It’s sort of overwhelming, it’s very exciting and I’m just proud to do it for my club,” Althouse said.
“It’s massive for me, I think I downplay it a little, but this is massive and I’m very grateful to have this opportunity.
“I coach the under-12s team, so just being able to get around the younger generation and being someone they can look up to is a great feeling.
“I’d definitely like to take my game to the next level, I’m actually planning to head to Melbourne soon, so that’s exciting.”
She finished the season 11 votes clear of Nightcliff’s Mickayala Ward, and 15 votes ahead of St Mary’s captain Emily Forshaw.
Meanwhile, Peter Politis of Nightcliff clinched the Men’s NT News Rising Star medal on the back of a season where he truly cemented his place in the Tigers starting side.
In the women’s it was 17-year-old Palmerston forward Tatyana Perry who secured the best junior accolade, securing her nomination in Round 1 and finishing the season with 20 goals.
As for the Premier League goal kicking it was St Mary’s that dominated with Jackson Calder kicking 51 goals, while Kaitlyn Armstrong kicked 50 to win in the women’s.
