A stunning three-goal performance on debut from Palmerston teenager Tatyana Perry has seen the Magpies spoil the Tiwi Bombers’ historic first match in Women’s Premier League at TIO Stadium.
Palmerston, who were kept scoreless in the opening quarter, looked slicker the longer the game went on as Madison Lampton also slotted three.
The black and white defence tightened, keeping the Bombers to just three measly points after half time, and scoreless in the final term with the game up for grabs.
With the Pies trailing by a straight kick at the final break, Palmerston grabbed the lead for the first time through majors to Madison Lampton and a brilliant soccer off the ground from Perry, who was also playing alongside her mother Hayley Davey.
After the game, Perry said her first major from a set shot in the second quarter settled her nerves, following her mother’s advice to “kick the goals” if she was within range, to a tee.
“It was good to have mum on the field as well helping me,” Perry said.
“I’m not used to the bigger bodies.
“There was a lot of experience on the team … it really helped (the younger players).
“We just came out with a bang in the first game.”
Meanwhile, the Bombers look to have a few stars on their hands with Maria Rioli and Arthurina Moreen, as the visitors started the stronger outfit in their first match in Women’s Premier League.
Earlier, it was a half of momentum swings in the first half at Marrara with both the Pies and the Bombers enjoying periods of dominance.
The Michael Centre was the scoring end, with five of the seven goals for the half kicked in that direction.
The Bombers finally got some fluidity into their game through a terrific dash along the wing from Rioli.
And with Kelsea Berto providing plenty of forward thrusts, it was Ephrianna Tipungwuti who emerged as the first to score a six-pointer for the Bombers at Women’s Premier League level, roving a pack spillage smartly.
Tiwi quickly made it two through a soccer off the ground from Berto, which was initially called a point before being overturned.
It was more of the same early in the second with Tiwi continuing to rove packs with maximum impact; captain Phylisia Palipuaminni doing exactly that, swinging onto her left to hand Tiwi their fourth goal and a hefty margin.
However, against the flow of play, Palmerston stormed back into the match, with Dakotah Pettit-Holmes the beneficiary of a slick handball for the Pies’ first.
Then Perry nailed two quickly from almost the same position to trim the lead to just three points.
The Bombers produced a steadier with a great snap from Rioli, extending the margin to nine, but Palmerston were growing in confidence.
And the Bombers would not score another goal for the game; that stunning off-the-ground goal from Perry the icing on the cake.
Bomber player Kirra Hill-Carter said it was a proud day for the Islands despite the loss.
“It means a lot,” Hill-Carter said.
“It’s a really good opportunity ... I’m really proud to be a part of that.”
