Former AFL star Nicky Winmar will face court next month over assault allegations.

The former St Kilda great is alleged to have committed the assault after the St Kilda-Essendon game at Marvel Stadium at Docklands on March 30.

Winmar, 53, is reportedly accused of attacking a taxi driver after a brief argument.

Victoria Police said the ex-footballer will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 8.

“As the matter is before the court we are not able to comment further,” a spokeswoman said.

Police confirmed a man had been charged with “a number of offences including assault.”

The Herald Sun understands that Winmar has disputed a fare with the taxi driver, who had wanted to charge an excessive amount for a 20-minuteride.

Another person was also in the cab and the dispute escalated.

A statue of Winmar was unveiled at Perth Stadium on July 6.

The 2.75m bronze statue depicted the moment he lifted his jumper and pointed to the colour of his skin after a day of racial abuse from Collingwood fans at Victoria Park in 1993.

Winmar played 251 games for St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs between 1987 and 1999.

He was the first indigenous footballer to play more than 200 games.
