“It’s not just a black and white issue – our kids today, they’re not like our kids of yesterday,” youth worker Barbara Shaw told A Current Affair.

“Our kids today have no sustainability in their lives, there is no routine, they’re lacking in education. It’s sad you know and it hurts people, it’s hurting the community of Alice Springs.”

They come across teenagers wearing ankle bracelets and drunk partygoers spilling into spot fires of violence on the streets.

The people they speak to say crime has always been a problem in Alice Springs but argue it all changed with the Royal Commission into the Northern Territory’s youth detention system.

Outcomes of the Royal Commission saw bail laws relaxed, while detaining procedures meant youth offenders had to be released from custody after four hours if they had not been charged.

A statement provided to A Current Affair by Chief Minister Michael Gunner said his government was open to a review of the legislation.

“While we respect the independence of the courts, we are also constantly monitoring their effectiveness and will make legislative changes where we feel it is necessary in order to break the cycle of crime,” Mr Gunner told A Current Affair.
