THREE break-ins in five days has left a Darwin restaurateur feeling ‘numb’, admitting he is not handling the constant attacks on his businesses well.

Since New Year’s Day, Jason Hanna’s Deck Bar in Darwin has had an attempted break-in and a successful break in, while Good Times in Palmerston has been broken into once.

Mr Hanna said after such a bad year for the hospitality industry, it was a disappointing start to 2021.

“I’m just numb from it these days, it really makes me want to go back to bed and sleep and forget about it,” he said.

“It’s been going on for so long. People ask how I handle it but the reality is I don’t handle it that well.”

Mr Hanna said Deck Bar was broken into through the lock, luckily without too much damage.

“The alarm would have went off, they would have grabbed what they could and gotten out of there,” he said.

“We’ve obviously got the security in the CBD which makes a difference … there’s not much more we can do other than ramp it up.”

Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said police foot patrols with real power returning to the street would be the best way to mitigate crime.

“Security guards have played a good role in reducing crime and when they are there crime doesn’t happen but their powers are limited, they can’t arrest people, they can’t ask people to go, they can only provide assistance or be a deterrent by their presence,” he said.
