Two men allegedly part of a “joint criminal enterprise” have been charged with murder after a man was gunned down in a Sydney street just a stone’s throw from a school, exposing young students to the bloody reality of the city's underworld.

Emergency services raced to Broughton St in Canterbury about 2am on July 27, 2023 to find Ferenc “David” Stemler, 28, gravely injured with gunshot wounds.

Despite NSW Ambulance’s best efforts, Mr Stemler died at the scene.

On Wednesday, Homicide Squad detectives charged Jayden Mahara, 27, with murder, and with shooting at a dwelling and aggravated break and enter over a separate alleged shooting and home invasion in the same month.

Less than 24 hours later, Christmar Banares, 30, was charged with murder at Kempsey Police Station in relation to the shooting.

He was also charged with three counts of possess unauthorised pistol, and acquire etc firearm - subject to prohibition order.

Police will allege the shooting of Mr Stemler was carried out by a sole “joint criminal enterprise”, a NSW Police statement read.

To date, five people including Mahara and Banares have been charged in connection to the alleged murder of Mr Stemler and remain before the courts.

“Police will allege in court Mahara was one of the three men in the car at the time of the murder of Ferenc Stemler,” a NSW Police statement read.

“(Mahara) was also charged by Robbery & Serious Crime Squad detectives for his alleged role in a shooting and home invasion in Lidcombe in July 2023, which was investigated under Strike Force Lovelock.

“During the aggravated home invasion, a number of shots were allegedly fired, and a 31-year-old man allegedly injured.”

Three men have previously been charged over the alleged Lidcombe home invasion.

At Kempsey Local Court on Thursday, both Mahara and Banares had their matters mentioned but did not appear. The pair did not apply for bail and bail was therefore refused.

Their matters have been adjourned to February 26 where their matters will be mentioned in Burwood Local Court.

The Daily Telegraph’s editor Ben English previously explained the masthead's decision to publish the distressing photo as an effort to draw attention to the appalling consequences of Sydney’s out-of-control underworld.

Mr Stemler’s alleged murder is being investigated by Task Force Magnus, which incorporates dozens of detectives from the State Crime Command, Counter-Terrorism and Special Tactics Command, and suburban Sydney police commands to combat organised crime.
