A private school maths teacher has been bailed over historic sex offences where he preyed on boys during class and on school camp.

Former Camberwell Grammar teacher Trevor Alan Spurritt, 75, was found guilty of nine charges of indecent assault against boys under the age of 16, from 1969 to 1971.

The three week trial ran through August but had been suppressed, with a second trial due to run afterwards.

That second trial, with allegations from the 1990s, was dismissed yesterday.

Spurritt was bailed, with a plea hearing set for November.

He was found guilty of preying on young boys during school camps, where he was a supervisor, on the ground of the Canterbury campus, and even during class with other children present.

One victim told of sitting next to a classmate when Spurritt squeezed in between them.

While “talking to him about his work”, Spurritt moved his hand up the boy’s thighs until he was touching his penis.

“The incident lasted a short time after which Mr Spurritt got up and went back to teaching the class”, court documents state.

The crimes took place on school camps and in classrooms in-front of other students.

The boy would be targeted again in an identical incident when he was sitting alone in class.

Another victim, then aged 11 or 12, told the court of being called to the front of class to have a test marked when Spurritt put his hand in the child’s pants pocket and touched him through the fabric.

“(The victim’s) memory is that it went on for what he thinks was about a minute during which time the accused smiled at him and continued to talk to him about maths,” court documents read.

The same boy was later on school camp in Frankston, known as the Church of England Boys’ Society (CEBS), when Spurritt came into his hut to tell the students to go to sleep.

Spurritt moved over to the boy, who was sleeping on the top bunk, and performed a lewd act on him, making the child feel “shocked and disgusted and that he just froze”.

At another camp in Bambara, when the boy was again on the top bunk, Spurritt sexually assaulted him again when he came to tell the children to go to sleep.

Another victim told of being assaulted at the same CEBS camp.

Spurritt found the boy in the mess hall, where he was feeling unwell, and put his hand down the child’s football shorts.

Spurritt would touch the boy again at school, where he would hit him with a large wooden compass then touch his buttocks as if he was trying to “rub it better”.

A fourth former student told of when he was 11-years-old on camp at Mt Disappointment, where Spurritt put his hands under his pyjamas and moved them to his pubic area.

The boy rolled over, and Spurritt removed his hand.

Spurritt was found guilty on all these counts.

However, he was found not guilty of a further three charges of indecent assault.

Spurritt will appear at the County Court for a pre-sentence hearing on November 8.
