Retired Camberwell Grammar teacher in court on sex assault charges

SEVEN men have accused a private boys’ school teacher of historical sex assaults spanning two decades.
Retired Camberwell Grammar teacher Trevor Spurritt, 74, faces 14 charges of indecent assault between 1969 and 1991.
CAMBERWELL GRAMMAR SCHOOL TEACHER FACES HISTORICAL SEX CHARGES
Mr Spurritt was a maths teacher at Camberwell Grammar and is also understood to have been a lead teacher on school camps.
He also worked as a part-time teacher at Brighton Grammar between 2008 and 2012 before retiring.
The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this morning heard the allegations were in the context of “student and teacher”.
Mr Spurritt was in court this morning where he faced three charges of indecent assault against a male under 16 and a further 11 charges of indecent assault against a male.
The majority of charges — 13 in total — relate to sex assault allegations made by six males between 1969 and 1972.
The most recent charge is of indecent assault against a male between 1 January 1991 to 31 December 1991.
Mr Spurritt opposed, through his lawyer, the release of the charges and the agreed summary of the case to the media.
The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard Mr Spurritt denied the allegations made against him when he was interview by police.
He specifically “denied touching any student inappropriately”.
Despite his opposition, the request for release of charge sheets was approved.
Camberwell Grammar headmaster Dr Paul Hicks last month sent a letter to parents and said the alleged incidents were not reported to anyone at the school at the time.
The matter was adjourned for a three-day committal at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on June 4, 2018.
