A PRIVATE boys’ school teacher has been charged over historical sex assault allegations against two children in the 1960s and 70s.

Retired Camberwell Grammar School teacher Trevor Spurritt, 74, was charged with indecent assault and is expected to face court next week.

The Herald Sun understands the retired teacher faces 13 charges of indecent assault of a male under the age of 16, between 1969 and 1972.

It’s believed the alleged offending occurred both on the independent school’s grounds and at other locations.

Mr Spurritt’s teaching registration was suspended in August this year.

Camberwell Grammar headmaster Dr Paul Hicks on Wednesday sent a letter to parents notifying them of the charges against the former teacher.

“The person concerned has long since left the school and the incidents were not reported to anyone at the school at the time,” he wrote.

“We have cooperated with the police in this investigation and have assisted them with their inquiries. However, given the matter is now before the courts, we are not able to make any further comment on the specific case at this time.

“Nevertheless, we believe that any form of sexual abuse is criminal and abhorrent, and we believe that if someone is found guilty of such abuse, they should be brought to justice.”

Mr Spurritt was also a part-time teacher at Brighton Grammar School from 2008 to mid-2012.

Headmaster Ross Featherston confirmed that no complaints “of this or any other nature” had been made against Mr Spurritt during his employment.

“BGS was contacted as a courtesy by Victoria Police but not with respect to his time at BGS,” Mr Featherston said.

“The welfare and safety of our students is of course our highest priority.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Box Hill Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Teams (SOCIT) detectives have charged a 74-year-old man from the eastern suburbs with indecent assault”.

He is expected to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on December 6.
