Eric Victorsen appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday via videolink over the tragic deaths of Matt Goland and Bita Zaeim.

The 19-year old—who could be seen teasing and checking-out his hair style on the court monitor — announced that he had been banged-up for a month in an adult jail before being transferred to juvenile detention.

“I have been to adult prison before and they moved me to youth detention because of stuff,” he said.

Mr Victorsen has been charged with two counts of culpable driving and one of car theft.

Police allege Mr Victorsen and a 15-year old girl stole the $170,000 Lexus 4WD that ploughed into the couple’s car about 1am on Saturday.

Mr Goland 38, died in the crash. Ms Zaeim, 32, was pulled from the wreckage, but died before arriving at hospital.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Franz Holzer ordered Mr Victorsen provide police with a DNA sample and be assessed by forensic medical doctors.

He heard the teen had an acquired brain injury and concerns were held about his mental health while locked-up.

Mr Victorsen did not apply for bail and will return to court in August.
