Three prison guards are in hospital after being brutally bashed by a jailhouse tattoo artist, copping an onslaught of blows after busting the illicit operation.

A jailhouse tattooist bashed three guards after his behind-bars operation was busted.
Three officers were taken to hospital after the ink artist’s onslaught at maximum security Port Phillip Prison this week.
The Herald Sun has been told a makeshift tattoo gun was recovered inside the cell.
It is believed the gun was being used to tattoo other prisoners.
Tattoo guns are banned items inside jails, partly because of the risk of them spreading disease.
Two victims are believed to have suffered severe facial injuries in the confrontation at the privately run jail.

G4S, the company which runs Port Phillip said police had attended the prison as part of an investigation.
Its director of justice operations, Brett McMerrin, said three Correctional Officers involved were sent to hospital for assessment and treatment on July 14.
“The safety and security of our staff is of paramount importance,” Mr McMerrin said.
Opposition corrections spokesman David Southwick said there had been too many incidents in recent years in the state’s adult and juvenile corrections sphere.
“Victoria is running the most expensive, yet worst performing correctional system of any state in the nation,” Mr Southwick said.
