Up to 20 razor sharp medical blades were found in the cell of an ultra-violent teen thug

who is locked up in relation to a murder.

About 100 of the podiatry scalpels were stolen from the medical supply room of the Malmsbury Youth prison facility last month.

Authorities have been battling to account for them ever since.

Police believe the theft occurred on June 11, but it was not until two weeks later they were noticed missing, by then they had been distributed among the prison.

A number of the scalpels were found in the violent teen’s room — who was this year sentenced to three years for assisting in a homicide — following a targeted room search.

Finding such dangerous weapons in the teen’s room has alarmed staff due to his history of violent attacks on both staff and other inmates.

In his most serious assault the boy stabbed a security and emergency response team officer in the head with a pen last year.

In December the teen attacked a unit manager — stomping on his head while he was on the ground.

In an effort to manage the teen he has been moved between the Parkville Youth Justice Centre and Malmsbury.

The Herald Sun has been told the teen recently cut himself and wrote “I’m Back” on a wall at Malmsbury.

A box of the scalpels was stolen last month when another teen came across them in a consultation room at the medical centre.

Staff acted on intelligence on June 28 that inmates had prohibited items and put the facility in lockdown.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said staff seized a number of items during the targeted room searches.

“The young people involved are being appropriately managed, with their actions reported to Victoria Police and the Youth Parole Board,” she said.

“The department will investigate the incident thoroughly and the matter has been referred to Victoria Police to identify whether criminal charges are appropriate.

“The safety of staff, young people and the community is of the utmost importance.”
