Police officers injured, woman tasered, in dramatic highway stop

TWO police officers remain in hospital after a highway stop went dramatically wrong in Bendigo last night, with a man trying to drive off with one in his car before smashing into the other.

TWO police officers have been injured and taken to hospital following a dramatic highway stop in Bendigo on Friday night.

After being pulled over in Kangaroo Flat around 6.20pm, a male driver tried to drive off with an officer in his car, before hitting a female officer as he fled.

Highway Patrol officers had stopped a blue Honda Civic on the Calder Freeway following reports it had been driving erratically.

The male driver reportedly became hostile and police used a Taser on the female passenger who was refusing to co-operate.

The male driver tried to speed off while the male police officer was in the car.

The leading senior constable was able to get himself out of the car but copped minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

The female officer at the scene was hit by the car as it fled the scene and was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

After speeding away, the Honda stopped near Fogartys Gap Rd, where the driver was arrested and the passenger was taken to hospital for observation.

The investigation is ongoing and the male driver is assisting police with their inquiries.
