HOONS are flocking to illegal “burnout” sessions in suburban Melbourne despite heightened police scrutiny and a crash that killed two teenagers.
The Herald Sun has learned underground groups the Northern Skids and South East Skids have both held such meetings in recent weeks.
On Wednesday night alone, more than 200 revheads converged on five industrial locations across the north.
Text messages seen by the Herald Sun show hoons, undeterred by the January street-race deaths of two teens after an illegal burnout meet, mocking authority.
Inspector Mick Daly said: “These hoons are arrogant and overconfident.
“They brag about their behaviour online.
“And our message to them is: We see you, we’ll find you, we’ll charge you, and we’ll seize your car.”
An insider said it was a matter of time before crowds more than doubled to their former level.
“It was just skids galore,” the insider said.
“People have just waited around and now it’s back on.
“It will just be on, like how it was last time.
“It will come back in full force again without a doubt.”
The Northern Skids met at Epping, Tullamarine, Thomastown and Campbellfield.
An anonymous text advised: “Block the jacks (police). Don’t let the pigs spoil the fun boys. Don’t be a kid, rip a f----- skid! Less traction, more action!”
About 20 vehicles — some on video obtained by the Herald Sun, did burnouts but had to dodge police.
A black Holden exceeding an estimated 60km/h can be seen coming within a metre of spectators.
It’s understood the South East Skids met in the Tullamarine area the previous night.
A Tullamarine business owner, who did not want to be named, confirmed illegal skids were held in Ovata Dr on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Some people are scared to leave their factories, and sleep there overnight,” she said.
“I feel sorry for the parents of these kids coming to watch. A car could lose control and they could be injured, or worse.”
These are the biggest known hoon gatherings since Harley Churchill, 19, and Ivana Clonaridis, 18, died in an illegal street race while returning from a Northern Skids meet on January 27.
Harley’s ute ploughed off an embankment near the EJ Whitten Bridge.
Police issued infringements in Campbellfield and Coolaroo on Wednesday and in Sunshine West on Tuesday.
