Crude message signals resurrection of Melbourne hoons Northern Skids

A CRUDE message declaring “tonight’s the night” signalled the resurrection of the notorious Northern Skids group

A CRUDE message declaring “tonight’s the night” signalled the resurrection of the notorious Northern Skids group.

The text — signed “some c — t from the north” — was issued about 6.20pm and soon spread. The location of meets followed, in a bid to avoid police.

But when revheads converged on an Epping industrial estate in Gateway Boulevard just before 10pm they found officers waiting for them.

They quickly dispersed and regrouped at Tullamarine’s Ovata Dr, then to Brand Dr in Thomastown; again, two police cars in a McDonald’s car park thwarted plans.

At one point it’s understood they drove on the opposite side of the road, reversed down the street, ran red lights and even veered on to a footpath when police tried to block their path on Dalton Rd.

Spectator numbers grew as the night went on, swelling to more than 200 at the fourth location in Foden Ave, Campbellfield.

The message the signalled Northern Skids’ resurrection.

The location of the final meet, a street in Tullamarine even secret from many in the group, was sent about 11.30pm.

“Everyone were pretty excited it was back on,’’ an insider said.

“There was, easy, from the second spot onwards, in excess of 100, 200 people plus.

“I would say it would max out at about 250, 280.

“Give it some time, maybe a month or two, and they will be back in the 500-plus people.

“Once the word spreads and everyone gets all the messages again it will be back out there.”

High-performance vehicles including a luxury Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and a new Holden Commodore SS were among vehicles spinning their wheels.

The Herald Sun was told one driver was a young woman celebrating her birthday.

There was apparently no sign of former organisers.

Hoons were told to keep details about the meet off the internet and to follow meet rules.

“This is not a car show,’’ the message read.
