A mattress and a plastic chair was set alight in an inmate’s cell at Port Phillip Prison just after 7.30am this morning.

MFB spokesman Andrew Stephenson told the Herald Sun two fire crews were still at the scene ventilating the cell after the fire was extinguished.

A ladder was used to gain access to the second level cell.

No one was injured, Mr Stephenson said

3AW reported staff had been evacuated while the fire was brought under control.

It is the second fire in a cell at the maximum-security prison in less than a week, with a similiar incident occurring on October 30.

JAILHOUSE TATTOOIST BASHES THREE GUARDS

The privately run prison made headlines recently after a foiled Shawshank Redemption-style jailbreak attempt.

Three inmates at the state’s largest maximum-security prison used makeshift tools to remove bricks from a cell, apparently with plans to dig their way out and scale the fencing.

It’s understood the inmates stuffed tissue into the gaps of the bricks in place of mortar.
