A LONE offender ambushed two security guards moments after they made a cash pick-up at a shopping centre in Mulgrave this morning.

Acting Senior Sergeant Simon Polson said the man parked his motorbike in an underground carpark before confronting the Armaguard pair with a firearm as they walked back to their van shortly after 8am at Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre this morning.

“The guards are obviously shaken by what’s happened,” Acting Snr Sgt Polson said.

Shoppers told of their terror, with witness Lee Wilson saying he was exiting a taxi when he saw a “big, bulky guy” wearing a motorcycle helmet point a shotgun at the security van in the carpark of the Mulgrave shopping centre.

“It all happened so fast ... no one knew what was going on,” Mr Wilson said.

“I didn’t know if he was going to shoot at random people or not ... I was scared.”

Mr Wilson called police as the armed offender made off with several bags of cash.

Another witness, who did not wish to be named, said the offender kept the tinted helmet on with the visor down during the entire holdup.

“The gun looked like it was wrapped in something ... like he was trying to conceal it,” the witness said.

“I could hear the guards yelling at him to drop the gun.”

The witness said he did not see the motorcycle but the offender “legged it” with two or three large green duffel bags.

The guards were understood to be armed at the time of the robbery, but it is not clear if they produced any weapons during the confrontation.

“They were in a dangerous predicament and have responded by doing what they’re trained to do,” Acting Snr Sgt Polson said.

“It’s always dangerous when someone is producing firearms, particularly ... when the guards are armed themselves,” he said.

It is not yet known the amount of money the man stole.

The man is believed to be wearing a dark jacket and black motorbike helmet and riding a dark-coloured road bike, last seen heading towards Police Rd.

The motorbike did not have numberplates.

Police believe the bike may have been spotted in the Noble Park area shortly after and are keen to speak to the person who reported it to triple-0.

The Armed Crime Squad will continue to investigate and anyone who sees someone that matches the offender’s description is urged to not to approach the man but to instead call triple-0 immediately.
