A TEENAGER who allegedly kicked a policeman in the head at a Melbourne shopping centre has refused to get on a bus to take him to court.

The 17-year-old is accused of kicking an officer in the head at Highpoint shopping centre in Maribyrnong on Boxing Day last year.

He was due to face a children’s court on Thursday charged with assaulting a police officer but he was not present.

His lawyer sought to have the matter heard by video link from the youth justice facility but magistrate Jane Gibson wouldn’t allow it.

“He’s refused to get on the bus to come to court,” Ms Gibson said.

“I am not going to grant permission for video link.” Ms Gibson remanded the boy in custody until the next hearing.

Police have previously said the teen attacked the officer with a “soccer kick” to the head as he was trying to arrest a shoplifter.

The policeman was allegedly in a vulnerable position on the ground when the accused teen ran at him from the side and kicked him.

The boy, who can’t be named, was originally bailed over the alleged assault but taken into custody earlier in January for breaching his conditions.

He previously received a 12-month probation order in July for aggravated burglary, vehicle theft and other offences.

He is due to return to court on February 8.
