A Norlane man who went on a car theft spree across Geelong, jumped from a moving vehicle moments before it collided with a police car.

Tyler Anderson, 23, pleaded guilty in the Geelong Magistrates Court to stealing cars and stealing from cars.

On April 10, about midday, Anderson was seen by a resident acting suspiciously in Norlane. He was spotted loading goods stolen from a car into his vehicle, which was also stolen.

Police spotted Anderson behind the wheel of the stolen car and he jumped out of the vehicle, which was in reverse, and collided with a police car.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Georgie Hadzig said Anderson tried to run away from the scene, but was arrested.

Ms Hadzig said the car Anderson was in, had been stolen earlier that morning and CCTV footage revealed he was driving the car at about 8am.

When police searched the vehicle, they found a wallet and a credit card that didn’t belong to him, as well as a baton and prescription medicine that was not in his name.

In an interview with police, he said he picked up the stolen car from a friend.

The court was also told of other instances where Anderson was driving stolen cars in Geelong – in August and July.

On August 21, Anderson stole multiple items from cars in Grovedale, including ear pods, tool boxes, Bunnings vouchers, cash and baseball equipment.

Anderson’s lawyer, Stephanie Mawby, said her client had a significant previous criminal history for someone his age and was hoping to break the cycle.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie postponed sentencing until next Tuesday and said the best thing Anderson could do was get a job.

“It would give him something to do all day and be some reward where he can feel good about himself. Life without work is pretty boring, there is not much to do, and people can get into strife,” Ms McGarvie said.
