A Norlane man who tortured a woman so much during a horror camping trip that she had nothing left when he raped her has been jailed for his “callous” crimes.

George Humphreys, 42, was sentenced to 14 years behind bars after drugging, tying up and raping the woman during the camping trip.

The Geelong County Court heard on Wednesday the night-long ordeal happened just days before Humphreys was going to hand himself into police for stealing a car and pushing it into the ocean.

In sentencing, Judge Sandra Davis called his crimes “callous” and “degrading”.

The horrendous acts happened at Coopers Bridge – a free campsite in the Moreep bushland reserve – in early 2020.

The court was told a sleep-deprived and “erratic” Humphreys was injecting ice and telling the woman they were “going to have fun” on their way to the camp site.

Judge Davis said during the trip, Humphreys knelt on the victim’s arm and injected ice against her will.

The court was told Humphreys also tied a rope around the victim’s neck, arms and hands and tried to rape her.

A short time later, Humphreys dragged the woman out of the tent and tied her hands with a rope above her head to a tree.

“She told you she was cold and embarrassed and asked if you could take her back to the tent so she could get her clothes and a blanket,” Judge Davis said.

The court was told the victim was tied to the tree in the middle of the night for a few hours.

After Humphreys untied the victim, she tried to escape but Humphreys said “get back here, I will kill you, you c---”.

The court was told the victim felt defeated, had given up and was forced back into the tent with Humphreys where he then raped her.

In a victim impact statement read out in court it was revealed after the offending the woman was unable to eat or sleep and was terrified for her safety.

A jury found Humphreys guilty of rape, attempted rape, false imprisonment, making a threat to kill, and common law assault after a three week trial at Geelong County Court earlier this year.

He received a non-parole period of 10 years.

He also pleaded guilty to car theft, criminal damage and reckless conduct endangering serious injury for a separate incident.

The court heard Humphreys had stolen a car from a Coburg North dealership before pushing it into the ocean on December 30, 2019.
