A serial thief was out of jail for just five days before he was back on the street breaking into cars, a court has heard.

The Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard a woman woke when her security system went off about 3.30am on August 8 this year, with CCTV showing Kaleb Silcock standing in her Newcomb driveway.

The woman could see Silcock trying to break into her Toyota Land Cruiser, before successfully getting into another car parked in her driveway.

Silcock, of no fixed address, had just been released from jail after serving a 75 day sentence for thefts and aggravated burglaries when he was caught reoffending.

The 26-year-old pleaded guilty in court on Monday to attempting to steal from cars in Newcomb, and stealing and using credit cards.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Laura Wood told the court the woman called police and yelled at Silcock who fled the scene.

Constable Wood said police attended the scene and found other cars that Silcock had rummaged through.

Police found Silcock in Brayshay Rd, Newcomb and found a wallet, and some personal cards inside his jacket, which did not belong to him.

When questioned by officers, Silcock declined to be interviewed and instead asked police to “just send me straight to court”.

On Tuesday, Magistrate Ann McGarvie told the court Silcock’s house was “unliveable”.

Silcock’s lawyer Travis Brown said his client needed to be properly assessed before he would be released from custody and that Silcock needed treatment.

“There’s not much more I can submit on the topic … but at the same time people can’t be warehoused in prisons. It’s a difficult one, it really is,” Mr Brown said.

Ms McGarvie remanded Silcock in custody until October 24, and requested an urgent justice plan assessment.
