All Princes Freeway lanes heading towards Geelong have reopened eight hours after a serious crash between a truck and a van prompted a road closure.

The road was closed shortly after 3am near the Little River turn-off in Point Wilson.

It’s believed cause of the crash was a small rigid truck colliding into the rear of a black Mercedes van.

The truck driver, aged in his 60s, had to be cut from the wreckage and was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with leg injuries, according to an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman.

The van driver, a 47-year old male, was also flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with back pain.

He remains under police guard after officers allegedly found drugs in the vehicle.

“The St Albans man, who was found in possession of a quantity of suspected GHB, will be interviewed by police at a later date,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.

“It was also found the van was bearing suspected stolen number plates.”

All Geelong bound lanes between Little River Rd and Beach Rd were closed with VicTraffic warning drivers to expect significant delays.

“Delays are nearly back to Werribee Zoo,” a spokesman said at the time.

The freeway reopened at 11am after a police investigation into the crash location was completed.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time as the normal flow of traffic resumes.

All Melbourne-bound lanes were unaffected.
