Perfect, popularly known for his role in the television drama Offspring, has written the score for Beetlejuice, a big-budget musical opening in Washington DC later this year.

He has also reworked songs for King Kong, premiering on Broadway in November.

“I’m not gonna lie, it’s been pretty stressful working on two shows, but it’s been helped by the fact that they’re radically different in tone, and musically, and conceptually,” Perfect said.

“Beetlejuice is fast, funny, dark, macabre, wrong, super loopy and left-field. There’s really no extreme you can’t go to.

“And Kong has been really exciting, trying to find a new way through the story.

“It’s been so thrilling to see these works come together.”

Perfect, who lives in Melbourne, has divided his time between home and New York for the past year.

He said it was a dream come true to work on Broadway.

“In New York, there’s a collective insanity with theatre. Nobody stops to ask, ‘why are we doing this, why are we working so hard and flogging ourselves?’ You never hear it.”
