From bikie ties and driving at pregnant women to violent outbursts at fast-food joints, here are some Gold Coast dads who have faced court for their crimes.

Harley Barbaro

Becoming a father has not slowed down alleged Mongols gang member Harley Barbaro who has been charged with multiple offences since becoming a dad in March last year.

The 29-year-old’s most recent court appearance was in December when he was fined $300 for driving his Harley-Davidson without a licence.

In June last year he was sentenced to a month in prison for habitually consorting with recognised offenders between March 6 and June 6 last year.

Barbaro met people he was prohibited from contacting, including alleged Mongols national office holder Tyrone Poole, five times. One of those occasions included going to the pub and having dinner with them. Others were organised social functions such as birthday parties.

Barbaro is an accused Mongol and part of the notorious Barbaro family.

His brother Pasquale was shot dead by hooded gunmen on a western Sydney street in a suspected gangland killing.

In 2018, Barbaro was the first alleged gang member in Queensland to be charged with habitual consorting under the new Serious and Organised Crime legislation.

He has been in and out of court frequently in recent years.

Steven and Wayne Smith

A former Black Uhlans bikie and his junior football coach brother punched a drunk driver repeatedly in retaliation for a crash involving one of their wives.

Steven Edward Smith and Wayne George Smith punched Anthony James Everleigh in separate attacks in Highland Park on June 20, 2019.

Mr Everleigh – who had a blood-alcohol reading between 0.149 per cent and 0.24 per cent at the time of the crash – had an ear torn to its canal, a ripped nose bridge and cut to his lip needing sutures.

Steven Smith, 36, pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court in November 2021 to common assault.

Wayne Smith, 33, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm.

Judge Geraldine Dann sentenced Steven Smith to four months’ prison, with immediate release on parole.

Wayne Smith was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and fined $3000. No conviction was recorded.

The attack came months after Steven Smith had been arrested for stabbing millionaire Paul Piccone in a Mudgeeraba Park on August 1, 2018.

In June 2020, he was sentenced to four years in prison and released on parole in February this year.

Jackson Arthur Te Amo

A Kiwi dad jumped the counter of a Hungry Jack’s fast-food outlet and bashed a young worker because fries were left out of his order.

Jackson Arthur Te Amo walked from the Southport District Court in January 2020 after admitting to bashing a 19-year-old female attendant and threatening to “punch her in the head”.

His lawyer told the court the 43-year-old was racially abused and was exhausted after long shifts at a Gold Coast quarry.

Te Amo’s whopper meltdown about 6pm on October 28, 2018 started when he realised fries had not been included in his meal order.

He went back through the shop’s Labrador drive through about half-an-hour later and demanded cheeseburgers as compensation. When the young worker declined, he threatened her.

Crown prosecutor Jessica Guy said Te Amo told the worker: “How about I come in through that window and punch you in the head?”

After jumping the counter in the restaurant, Te Amo grabbed at the 19-year-old woman’s arms three times and hit her arm with his. It was then he slapped her in the face.

“It was unprovoked violence in a public place,” Ms Guy said. “When he didn’t get his way, he jumped over the counter and assaulted a young complainant.

The welder walked from court with no jail time. He was sentenced to two months’ prison, wholly suspended for 12 months.

Defence lawyer Joe Wicking, of Howden Saggers Lawyers, said Te Amo was going through a difficult period at the time and had been working 12 to 14-hour shifts at a quarry.

Danny Robert Brown

A Gold Coast dad spent almost five minutes looking at a $6000 bracelet before racing out of a shop with it.

Danny Robert Brown pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court in April 2020 to multiple charges including stealing.

CCTV footage shows Brown, 30, talking to a shop assistant at the Robina Cash Converters just after 1pm on New Year’s Eve last year.

It shows him looking at a bracelet priced at $6475 and holding it before handing it back. After almost five minutes of conversation, Brown picks up the bracelet again and runs from the shop.

Magistrate Pamela Dowse sentenced Brown to eight months’ prison with immediate parole release.

Andrew Ian Lane

A Gold Coast dad terrified concerned bystanders when he drove at four people, including a pregnant woman, at a shopping centre carpark and tried to mow them down, a court was told.

Andrew Ian Lane had spent five hours at a Pimpama pub prior to the frightening 11pm incident on August 14.

Lane, 28, pleaded guilty in Southport Magistrates Court in September 2020 to public nuisance, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving under the influence and failing to provide a specimen as required.

Witnesses saw the tradie drive a Mazda ute over witch’s hats and into a Hungry Jack’s drive through, rev his engine and yell: “Where’s my beer?”

They watched as Lane drove over several Pimpama City Shopping Centre car park garden beds before they approached him to offer help.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Daniel McShane said Lane started yelling and threatening to assault the witnesses “for no apparent reason”.

He said as they walked away Lane intentionally drove at two people, including a pregnant woman.

Magistrate Michelle Dooley sentenced Lane to 18 months’ probation, disqualified him from driving for 12 months and was fined $200 with no conviction.
