BPCA 2023: St Leonards all out for 49 and suffers heavy loss to Drysdale

A local club lost seven wickets for just 11 runs in a horror batting collapse. And it is the second time this team has bowled out a club for less than 50.

St Leonards is the latest team to be skittled by Drysdale, managing just 49 runs for their entire innings in an extraordinary batting collapse and already dropping their two-day match on Saturday.

The home side lost its last seven wickers for 11 runs as Drysdale’s opening bowlers ran rampant, with Blake Dobbin snaring 6/24 ad Hayden Eddy taking 4/20 himself.

The horror display came just a fortnight after Drysdale rolled Newcomb for 27 as Dobbin and Eddy both took five-wicket hauls.

St Leonards did show some resistance, leaving Drysdale 4/28 early on in their innings, but the Hawks remained four wickets down when they reached the paltry target of 50.

Their nightmare total paled in comparison to the last two rounds where they hit totals of 282 and 210 in one-day matches.

They finished the day batting again and managed to score a further 33 runs without losing a wicket after bowling out Drysdale for 178.

St Leonards, who were relegated from the BPCA A1 competition at the end of last year, had been competitive in their first four matches of the season before facing Drysdale, notching two wins against Wallington and Newcomb.

Captain Steve Grey believes his side gave up their wickets too easily and is hopeful it was just an aberration.

While they have already lost the match, Grey was pleased that his side was able to fight back by bowling out Drysdale and remaining none down at stumps in their second innings.

“It’s a tough one to take, especially when I thought we were moving forwards with our batting,” Grey

“We were still probably in one day mode, we weren’t committed to really hanging around. Our execution with shots weren’t probably right.

“There was some good bowling, they bowled pretty well but a lot of us got ourselves out.

“Drysdale are a good team, they bowled pretty well. Full credit to the guys, we stuck at it.

“To roll them and then be 0/33 in the second, it is pleasing – we could have been steamrolled but we did fight back very well.”
