Newcomb dismissed for 27 by Drysdale in BPCA2 cricket

A BPCA cricket club’s bubble has well and truly burst after a historic win last weekend, steamrolled inside an hour on Saturday.

It was all over in less than 90 minutes.

Newcomb came into the BPCA2 Round 3 match on Saturday with confidence having won its first game in 1064 days against Surfcoast after going winless across the last two seasons.

However, their bubble was well and truly burst by a Drysdale attack on Saturday at Ervin Reserve who routed them for just 27 in just 13 overs and less than an hour’s play.

And leading the attack was 16-year-old Hayden Eddy who took 5-5 off six overs, ably supported by vice-captain Blake Dobbin with the relatively expensive figures of 5-22 off seven.

At one point, Newcomb were 6-11, and then lost their last four wickets for just two runs.

Shane O’Connell was the only batter to reach double figures with a score of 13, amid nine scores of two runs or less.

Drysdale coach Rob Cutajar told the Geelong Advertiser it was the lowest score he was aware of in the league since playing with a St Leonards outfit which rolled Portarlington for 23 about 15 years ago.

“They got off to a good start, they were 0-0 off two,” Cutajar said of Newcomb diplomatically.

“They batted properly, I’m not sure what happened to them.

“Blake and ‘H’, they didn’t put a ball out of the spot.

“(Eddy is) going to be a gun.”

After winning the toss, Cutajar had decided to field first.

And his attack didn’t let him down, with four batters clean bowled and another trapped LBW.

“Against the weaker sides, I like to bowl first ... it boosts our energy if we’re only chasing little totals,” he said.

“It was the right kind of day to bowl first, it was a little overcast and windy.

“It didn’t work against Collendina, but the last two games they’ve stuck to the game plan and it’s worked.

“We were back in the sheds at 10 to two.”

Drysdale then hit the 28 runs needed for victory off just five overs, competing the game before 2.30pm.
