A “visibly upset” and “gutted” Ocean Grove playing group will have a week to take their minds off a devastating loss that leaves the Grubbers 1-6.

Ocean Grove led at every break in its game against Modewarre, but a breeze in the final quarter helped secure a come-from-behind win for the Warriors, running out 9.14 (68) to 9.5 (59) victors.

Modewarre coach Chris Hickey said his side was “a bit lucky” to get the four points.

“It was a bit of a battle, they’re a good team and they played really well for the entire game,” he said.

“But in the last quarter we started to execute a bit better, hit some kicks and we managed to stop them from doing that, and that was probably the difference in the end.

“I know they’re not off to a great start this season, but they’re a really dangerous football side and they’ll win some games soon.”

Warriors forward Aaron Black kicked two goals, while Edward Dayman slotted four majors for Ocean Grove.

Grubbers coach Pete Davey said the group was “absolutely gutted”.

“I guess that’s one thing we can take away from this game, is that passion the boys had,” he said.

“We put a lot of work into this game, and to be so close then not be able to execute when we needed to was devastating.

“There were a lot of boys that were visibly upset in the changeroom, there’s no doubting the care they have for the game and each other.”

Geelong Amateurs v Barwon Heads

Barwon Heads solidified its spot in the top five with a comfortable 11.9 (75) to 9.7 (61) win against Geelong Amateurs.

Sammy Baker and Shaun Lyle kicked three goals each for the Seagulls, while Ammos forward Kristian Bucovaz slotted four majors.

Torquay v Newcomb

The Torquay powerhouse rolled on, collecting another strong win at the hands of Newcomb as the Tigers claimed a 14.30 (114) to 6.7 (43) victory.

Weylin Doyle, Cooper Heard and Clay Page all slotted three goals for Torquay, while Newcomb’s Jack Duke also kicked three.

Portarlington v Queenscliff

Queenscliff claimed the four points against Portarlington with a 17.19 (121) to 5.10 (40) victory against the bottom side.

Jayden Durran was Queenscliff’s leading goal scorer with four majors, while Brod Dawson had three.

Drysdale v Anglesea

Drysdale continued its undefeated start to the season with a 14.20 (104) to 8.10 (58) victory against Anglesea.

Matt Hebbard kicked five goals for the Hawks, while James Breust chipped in with two and was one of Drysdale’s best players.
