CONSTANT changes to structure and combinations did not help Geelong West as the Giants lost to St Joseph’s at home.
The Giants were without Aleisha McDonald, who scored 38 goals in last week’s win against St Albans, and had to move players out of position to cope against Joeys, who eventually won 53-39.
Geelong West coach Jill Leader said she was proud of the effort from her young side, who competed hard with the ultimately strong St Joseph’s outfit.
“We were behind the eight-ball to start with, missing Aleisha meant we had to take Alahria Smith out of centre to plug the holes,” she said.
“On top of that we had a few out with Covid and the flu, so we struggled for depth and had to play the majority of players out of position.
“We essentially had 13 players for our A-B squad, we fought really well but Joeys were too strong and made us pretty rushed early on.”
Colac v St Albans
Colac continued its strong start to the season with a 60-49 win against St Albans.
Goal shooter Michelle Winch scored 43 of the Tigers goals as Colac moves to 5-1 to start the season, with a big game against Geelong West next week.
Grovedale v Bell Park
The Dragons soundly defeated Grovedale, winning each quarter and running out 57-18 victors.
Bell Park had multiple combinations in goals, with Bridgette Furphy scoring 25 and Makaela Connelly and Ella Wasik chipping in with 16 goals each.
Lara v St Mary’s
A dominant 49-goal performance from Saint Grace Parker helped St Mary’s close out a memorable 60-47 victory against Lara.
The Cats challenged in the second quarter before the Saints were able to pull away in the second half, moving to an even 3-3 on the season.
South Barwon v Leopold
South Barwon flexed its muscles against Leopold, running out comprehensive 71-25 victors.
An 18-1 second quarter allowed the Swans to run away with a big win, with Ellen Doyle piling on a season-best 61 goals in the victory.
