When the Melbourne Racing Club asked Jason Edwards to work with them to create a spectacular image to launch their New York-inspired spring racing season, he looked no further than the city’s oldest skyscraper as a backdrop.
“My inspiration for the photo simply came from what I believe to be New York City’s most beautiful building, the Flatiron Building,” Edwards says.
“What could be better than one of the first skyscrapers in the city of skyscrapers, with a movie star stunt horse and the beautiful Australian expat (model) Victoria Lee?”
Edwards says making the dream become a reality was months in the making for the May shoot.
“It took months to find the right departments to talk to, fill out the forms, apply for permits and get approvals,” he says.
“Unbelievably, the final New York City state department tick of approval didn’t come until moments before the close of business the day before the shoot.”
Tough light, construction workers in the way, the delayed arrival of the horse and its initial reluctance to rear all added to the pressure to get the shot.
“With only moments left on our allocated permit window and with the thousands of tourists beginning to flock, I got a strong image. The horse rested high and close enough to Victoria to bring it all together,” Edwards says.
“It was pretty surreal to shoot in such an iconic location.”
