In the thick of 2019 AFL Grand Final victory revelry, Tony Gough was swamped by photo opportunities every time he turned his head.
But when he saw some defiant GWS stars among a mass of Richmond fans celebrating their Grand Final win in Swan St, Richmond, he knew it was a great photo.
“My job was to go out looking for images whether of trouble or jubilation, and there was plenty of colour to be found,” Gough says.
“As soon as the crowds saw the TV cameras, it was like a moth to the flame but this photo was just a random moment.”
He was filing from his laptop that was perched on top of some rubbish bins in a side street and went to grab one of his cameras when he noticed it had gone.
He never thought he would see it again, feeling sure it had been stolen from his shoulder in the crowds but a fellow photographer found it about an hour later and returned it.
“I’ll never know exactly but it could have easily been taken when I was squashed in the crowd,” he says.
