AFL Grand Final party live: All the action from Punt Rd as Richmond fans celebrate Tigers' stunning win

Richmond star Dustin Martin says 'the cops wouldn't let us' join the Tigers premiership party in Swan St, but coach Damien Hardwick has revealed he did make it - but only a few people saw him.

Is this the start of a dynasty?

If you thought you were seeing things on Swan St in the wee hours of Sunday morning, chances are you weren’t.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick made good on his promise to visit the Tigers heartland after the club’s premiership victory — albeit after everyone had left.

Hardwick couldn’t sleep after the win, so headed to the famous Richmond strip at around 4am but found the party had ended.

“I thought the Tigers would be partying hard, but I had photos with cleaners walking down the street,” Hardwick laughed on Channel 9.

“I just thought I’d get up and walk around because unfortunately we weren’t allowed down there again last night.

“Hopefully third time lucky we’ll be able to get down there at some stage.”

Superstar Tiger and dual Norm Smith medallist Dustin Martin joked at Richmond's family day that he “can’t remember” the post-match celebrations and said he was still hopeful of a Swan St lap.

“We tried to get the bus to go down there last night but the cops wouldn’t let us,” he said.

“I might go down there today, sure.”

Ann emotional Josh Caddy has paid tribute to Richmond coach Damien Hardwick for backing him to play a role in the team’s push for a second premiership in three years.

The off-season arrival of gun recruit Tom Lynch combined with a new role for champion teammate Dustin Martin forced Caddy out of the attacking set up at the Tigers throughout 2019, and for a while he found himself playing in the VFL.

But the former Cat and Gold Coast forward fought back tears as he revealed a frank discussion with the Richmond coach during the year paved the way for his move to the wing, where he ultimately repaid the faith that Hardwick had shown in him.

“I faced a little bit of personal adversity this year and I had to change my role with Lynchy coming in and Jack and Dusty spending a lot of time forward,” Caddy said.

“But I have absolutely loved it and Dimma, I can’t thank him enough for backing me in. He said to me, ‘Mate, I want you in the side but it is not as a forward any more, we are going to put you on the wing’ and he has always backed me ever since I came to the club.

“I get a little bit emotional talking about Dimma because he is just an amazing man and I am forever thankful for him.

“He said to me, ‘We have got Jack, Dusty and Lynchy in the forward line and we need a few smalls’ and unfortunately I am not a little small fast fella, and they are three pretty good players, so I was the one who had to change things up.

“So he put me up on the wing in the second half of the year and I am so grateful that he backed me.”

The Grand Final victory was the ultimate birthday present for Caddy, who turned 27 as he celebrated his second premiership since arriving at Punt Rd.

Richmond fans have flocked to Punt Road to bask in premiership glory, and Dustin Martin took his on-field form to the stage.

The dual Norm Smith medallist is a man of few words, but he had Tiger fans in stitches when he gave the crowd an insight into the player’s celebrations on Saturday night.

When asked about the flag celebrations on stage in front of the Tiger Army, his answer was short and sweet: “Can’t remember.”

But while most of the Tiger faithful filled Swan Street to the brim on Saturday night, the premiership side was advised to steer clear.

“We tried to get the bus to go down there last night but the cops wouldn’t let us” Martin revealed with a smile.

“I might go down there today, sure.”

The superstar also got plenty of laughs with his reflection on his outstanding four-goal, 22 disposal display and Richmond’s team-first approach.

“We don’t care who gets the accolades we all play our role. We don’t care who gets the touches, who gets the goals. Although I did kick four,” Martin joked.

Martin was full praise for the entire club and boom recruit Marlion Pickett, setting up the 27-year-old's first AFL goal that sent the MCG into a frenzy.

“I was a bit tired, I didn’t think I could kick it,” he said.

“It’s one of the greatest stories in AFL history and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

“I love this team, I’m so grateful to be a part of this team, it’s the best club in the world – I love it.”
