When it comes to “cool”, Cameron Robbie (and his wardrobe) have it nailed where “70s French cinema” fashion persuasions mix with denim and Dior Diamond saddle bags to create the perfect ensemble. A seasoned thrift shopper (Armani suits for $40 – bravo!), Cameron fuses vintage, classic and luxury to create a closet that serves him from beach to BAFTA’S where his Grandmother’s chains give a nostalgic and stylish twist. Citing “attitude” as a wardrobe essential, Cameron’s wardrobe and fashion philosophy prove that true style can’t be taught.
Best Designer fashion purchase this year? My CD Diamond saddle bag is one of my favourite items in my closet at the moment but I also just picked a new pair of S1U’s sunnies from the Dior men’s pop-up in Brisbane’s QueensPlaza. Not losing these ones!
How would you describe your personal style? My stye is always evolving, I like to mix a bit of nostalgic and vintage surf wear, with clean cut elements. If it’s formal, I like a classic look but accessorise in a way that gives it a bit of character and modern edge.
Who are your style icons? 90s Brad Pitt, the cast of Dazed and Confused. If in doubt, I look to some 70s French cinema.
What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? I have a couple of necklace chains from my grandmother and a couple of shirts from my grandfather, things I cherish.
What are your favourite brands? Kourh, Paul McCann, Kloke, Rhythm, Double Rainbouu, Commas, Venroy, Nanushka, Dior, Prada, Tod’s.
Have you ever made a style faux pas? Most people would say my pandemic mullet and moustache … But I still miss it to this day, so I’m going with the skinny jean era.
What’s the most you have spent on an outfit? I usually bring pieces in and build as I go over time, always with consideration. But, one year I was fortunate enough to tag along to the BAFTA’s, I landed in London and realised I needed a Tuxedo fast, I walked into Hugo Boss, found one that was perfect, it was pricey for me at the time but I was willing. What I didn’t realise is that I needed a cummberband, cufflinks, the right shirt, the right shoes, the right socks! It was skilled upselling that made me hiccup, but I have no regrets, that Tux is beautiful and it’s served me well. If it’s classic, I see it as a purchase for life.
What is the most surprising thing in (or about) your wardrobe? A designated dress-ups box, a family tradition I’ve carried on, plus I’m always ready for a themed party. I think I even pulled out some 70s flares that I ended up wearing to fashion week.
Top three wardrobe must haves? Blue jeans. White tee. The attitude that you belong in what you wear.
What is the most sentimental item in your wardrobe? I like when my clothing comes with a story to tell. I have a pair of Tiffany cufflinks I received while being a part of a wedding party. Always a good memory when I put them on.
What would you buy if money was no object?
An original 1957 Omega Speedmaster. An obscene amount I would never spend but I think a cool story.
Summer or Winter Fashion? The Queenslander in me will always say summer.
Denim or Suits? You can’t pick a favourite child … Denim.
Loafers or sneakers? Sneakers.
Is there anything in your wardrobe you have regretted throwing out? No, but I have regretted lending clothes out. Brandon, if you’re reading this, I want my MSGM jeans back.
How many pairs of sunglasses do you own? Sunglasses are one of my favourite accessories to play with, but also my most lost item. I’ve purchased about 8 pairs this year. I currently have 0.
Favourite fashion era (i.e. 60s, 70s, 80s)? Give me a little bit of the 70s, crossed with the 90s, a hint of western and you’ve got my style.
Best bargain fashion purchase this year? I’m a big recycler and thrifter, I recently found a perfect condition and unhemmed black Giorgio Armani suit, with silk collar and white stitching. It fit’s like it was tailored to me and I think it cost me about 40 bucks. Pretty stoked with it.
The Dior Men’s Pop Up Brisbane boutique will be open until October 12th. It is located within Brisbane City’s Queensplaza precinct.
