Sporting fans cheered and celebrated at the huge Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) William Buck Premier Men's Grand Final this week.
Teams Old Brighton and Old Scotch played at the Elsternwick Park in Brighton on the AFL Grand Final Eve public holiday at 2.30pm on Friday.
Crowds went wild after Old Scotch won the Premier grand final match for the first time since 1978.
Old Scotch’s winning score was 14.11.95 — defeating Old Brighton who were only a little bit behind on 10.17.77.
At 11.30am that morning, Old Xaverians won the Premier reserves final with a total score of 13.6.84, defeating Old Scotch who ended with a score of 4.7.31.
It was the first time the Premier men’s showpiece was played on a public holiday — away from its usual Sunday timeslot.
The match was a thrilling one for viewers, being the only game of community footy that was hosted in Melbourne that day.
Minor Premiers Old Brighton vied for their first Premiership in the top flight in club history, while for Old Scotch — who defeated St Kevin’s in Saturday’s preliminary final — returned to the grand final 26 years in the making and 46 years since they last won held the title.
Fans can also watch the grand final replay on Kommunity TV.
CEO Jason Reddick said ahead of the game the public holiday Friday in September was introduced for the people of Melbourne to get into the “finals football spirit” with the AFL grand final being played the next day.
“However — from a community football perspective — there is no other football game being played in metropolitan Melbourne on that day,” Mr Reddick said.
“So with the support of our Premier men’s clubs, we are taking the opportunity to showcase our VAFA William Buck Premier Men’s grand final on this public holiday and further grow the exposure of our competition to all football followers across Melbourne.
“We welcome all football supporters to join us at Elsternwick Park for what promises to be a great day of high quality community football entertainment.”
There will also be an official match day function that includes lunch and drinks between 12pm and 2pm upstairs in the Elsternwick Park social room.
