Places to enjoy your next coffee at University of Melbourne

Late night uni study sessions and coffee go hand-in-hand. As second semester ramps up, we’ve found some of the University of Melbourne’s best cafes on (and off) campus to get your fix.

ON CAMPUS

HOUSE OF CARDS

Engineering Lane, Parkville

This socially responsible cafe donates $1000 monthly to causes nominated by its customers.

House of Cards also works with Clark St Coffee to create its own blend.

Mon-Thu: 7am-6pm, Fri.: 7am-5pm. Closed weekends.

CARTE CREPES

John Medley Building, Parkville

Come for your crepe fix and stay for great coffee. All Press Espresso is on the machine.

Weekdays: 7.30am-5pm.

BARETTO

Alan Gilbert Building, 161 Barry St, Carlton.

Satisfy sweet tooth cravings with slices and cakes while you enjoy a cup of coffee.

Weekdays: 6am-6pm, Sat: 7am-5pm.

PROFESSORS WALK

Baillieu Library, University of Melbourne, Parkville

This is the best place to study with a coffee. Find these guys in the library.

Weekdays: 8am-5pm, Sat: 11am-4pm.

POTTER ESPRESSO BAR

Ian Potter Museum of Art, Swanston St, Parkville

The museum may be temporarily closed, but the cafe is still open.

Daily: 7am-5pm.

CASTRO’S KIOSK

Physics Building, University of Melbourne, Tin Alley, Parkville.

Weekdays: 7.30am-6pm. Closed weekends.

STOVE TOP

1/108-128 Leicester St, Carlton

Try the 5 Senses blend at Stove Top. Not into coffee? Golden Gaytime milkshakes, Chamellia loose leaf tea, MOFO hot chocolate round out the other drinks.

Weekdays: 7am-5pm. Weekends: 8am-4pm.

DR DAX KITCHEN

Genetics Ln and Royal Pde, Parkville

Dr Dax is one of the earliest opening cafes on campus, so pit stop here before your morning study session. They do an awesome lunch, including al la carte and takeaway meals. Think pizza, baguettes, zaatars and rotis.

Weekdays: 6.30am-5pm

HOME. TWO

Mon-Pop, Cnr Swanston St and Monash Rd, Parkville.

Society Melbourne (a group of hospitality-based social enterprises) and University of Melbourne opened home.two to help improve youth homelessness. They’ve been serving Wood & Co coffee and vegan waffles since April.

Weekdays: 7.30am-3.30pm.

STANDING ROOM

Union House or Glyn Davis Building (Melbourne School of Design), Parkville.

These guys began pumping out coffees at University of Melbourne in 2013. Now they’ve expanded their reach to RMIT City and Monash Caulfield campuses. They roast their own coffee with Bureaux Collective.

Fancy coffee near the law and commerce buildings.

Mon-Sat: 7am-5pm, Sun: 8am to 5pm.

THE QUEENSBERRY POUR HOUSE

210 Queensberry St, Carlton

This brewhouse is modelled on the classic American diner with bottomless filter coffee. Coffee beans are roasted onsite and there’s a rotating single origin churned from the machine.

Weekdays: Mon-Fri. 7am-4pm. Saturday: 8am-4pm.

CODE BLACK

119 Howard St, North Melbourne

Code Black is a short hike from campus, but worth the trek for decent coffee. Think high-grade coffee beans, sourced from international farms and growers, made the way you like.

Daily, 7am-4pm

ASSEMBLY

60-62 Pelham St, Carlton

These guys know both coffee and tea. All coffee is roasted at the Bureaux Collective.

Weekdays: 7am-4pm, Sat: 8.30am-3pm
