VICTORIA is a beautiful place to admire from the ground, but have you seen our state at altitude?

Appreciate the natural wonders of regional Victoria while hiking Mt Bogong or sailing at the Rocky Valley Lake near Falls Creek.

Or if you want to travel to new heights in the city, visit Eureka 88 Sky Deck, sip a drink at the Rooftop Bar, down a burger at Easey's in Collingwood, or if adventurous, go sky diving in St Kilda.

1. TAKE IN CITY VIEWS WHILE SKYDIVING AT ST KILDA BEACH

It’s the closest skydiving experience to the CBD. Exit the plane from 15,000 feet and feel the adrenaline of a 60-second free fall. After the rush, enjoy seven minutes of sightseeing while you float to the ground at St Kilda Beach.

2. EAT A BURGER IN A TRAIN IN THE SKY

You read that right. Easey’s in Collingwood is famous for its rooftop train car restaurant, boasting beers and burgers with city views in one of three old-school Hitachi train carriages. James Hurlston’s menu is made up of our favourite greasy, cheesy comfort food burgers, mac and cheese and chilli cheese fries.

3. TAKE IN THE VIEWS FROM EUREKA 89 OR THE RIALTO

Two of the city’s tallest buildings boast more than just jawdropping views. Eureka’s Skydeck is a must-do for locals and tourists, with the glass box “The Edge” experience allowing you to see 88 storeys below as the floor becomes transparent. For something more refined, drink in the views over dinner at Eureka 89 or the Rialto’s Vue de Monde. Bookings essential. rialto.com.au

4. HIKE TO THE TOP OF MT BOGONG

If you’re staying in neighbouring Bright or Mount Beauty, a hike up Mt Bogong is non-negotiable. Victoria’s highest peak is a challenging, yet achievable day walk. The Mt Bogong summit walk can take six to 10 hours. The best time is from November to May.

5. DRINK A COCKTAIL AT A FUNKY ROOFTOP BAR

You’re spoilt for choice in Melbourne. Climbing the stairs at Rooftop Bar at Curtin House is worth the hike. The same could be said for The Waterside Hotel on Flinders St. Naked in the Sky on Brunswick St, Fitzroy, boasts city views, while you may spot a famous face at The Emerson, Prahran. QT Hotel’s new rooftop bar, Loop bar and Madame Brussels are also worth a nod.

6. SPOT MELBOURNE FROM THE ARTHURS SEAT CHAIRLIFT

The Eagle is a new addition to the peninsula skyline, with many Victorians having grown up with a very different-looking chairlift. After opening in 1960, the chairlift suffered a series of mishaps and closed in 2006. Some people may have visions of the chairlifts’ open bench seats. Fast-forward to 2018 and the 24 fully enclosed gondolas still offer the same breathtaking views.

7. SAIL ON ROCKY VALLEY LAKE

The spectacle of Rocky Valley Lake, near Falls Creek, is the highest significant body of water in Australia. Aside from fishing, boating and swimming, you can also sail and kayak on the lake. Bring your own craft or rent kayaks, sailboats and paddleboats in December and January.
