THERE’S plenty of things to see and do if you’re thinking of trekking to the Gippsland region for a visit.
Don’t forget to pack your hiking shoes — you’ll need them for exploring the many natural wonders of the region.
Get the heart rate up walking the Thurra River Sand Dunes or take in the fresh air and greenery along the Corrigan Suspension Bridge in the Tarra-Bulga National Park.
And no visit to Gippsland is complete without eating seafood fresh from the trawler at Lakes Entrance.

1. HIKE THE THURRA RIVER SAND DUNES
The two-hour, 4km return hike on sand dunes starts from the Thurra River camping area in Croajingolong National Park. It’s suitable for most fitness levels, but some bushwalking experience is recommended.
2. WALK ACROSS CORRIGAN SUSPENSION BRIDGE
You’ll be spoiled for views on this bridge, stretching through the rainforest canopy at Tarra-Bulga National Park. Find the bridge along the Fern Gully Nature Walk, starting at Bulga picnic grounds.
3. EXPLORE BUCHAN CAVES
Take a guided tour of the honeycomb limestone caves at Buchan, in East Gippsland. Choose from the fairy or royal cave tours, which feature beautiful calcite-rimmed pools and elaborate stalactites and stalagmites.

4. WATCH THE SUNRISE AT MALLACOOTA
The sleepy seaside town of Mallacoota is the first place in Victoria to see the sunrise.
Head to the beach for the best view.
5. HIKE TO WILSONS PROMONTORY LIGHTSTATION, WHALE WATCH FROM A CABIN
One reason thousands of tourists visit the lightstation is that it’s accessible only by foot. Take an inland 19km route or 24km Tidal River coastal route. Stay at a cottage next door.
6. WATCH A MOVIE AT TIDAL RIVER’S OPEN-AIR CINEMA
Bring a sleeping bag and settle in for the night. But guard your popcorn from wombats and possums. Open December to April.

7. BUY SEAFOOD FRESH FROM A TRAWLER IN LAKES ENTRANCE

8. WALK THROUGH SQUEAKY BEACH’S SAND AT WILSONS PROM

Visit between June and August to partake in the six tours, including the 30-minute dog sled dash, back country and family tours.
