Eating out is expensive. Staying in is overrated.
We hear you, Melbourne.
American Express delicious. Month Out is back for another year — and it couldn’t come soon enough.
The annual celebration of eating and drinking kicks off on Wednesday, packed with great-value dining deals for the entire month of May.
Here are the ten best deals to sink your teeth into.
1. Shush Burger’s two for one burgers
You read that right. Pay for one, get another free. Chef Sean Connolly leaves no crumbs with this lip-smackingly good deal. Try the Shush d-lux ($20); a lone beef patty whacked between apple wood-smoked bacon, red Leicester cheese, BBQ sauce and all the salad fixings. Double down with the grandaddy of burgers, the grandmaster, double meat and cheese creation, pickles and sauce ($29).
50 Bateman St, West Melbourne
2. Antara 128’s eight-course for $85
Can’t stomach paying $50 for a main: How does $8.50 sound? Hybrid bakery restaurant Antara 128 is behind a stonkingly good value degustation that costs $85 per person. Expect Antara’s famed anchovy twists and chicken on toast, wood smoke tickled Flinders Island scallops, crudo with green olives and more. Plus a free glass of wine (or non-alch beverage).
128 Exhibition St, Melbourne
3. Mietta’s cake and coffee combo
Cake queen Rosemary Andrews isn’t afraid to flex her sweet skills at her new Malvern digs. Try her signature, sixteen-layer Guinness cake with a Market Lane coffee for $18. Available dine in or takeaway.
23 Glenferrie Rd, Malvern
4. Miss Pearl x Khanh Nguyen
He’s back, in menu form. Ex-Aru/Sunda chef Khanh Nguyen takes a beat from new Sydney sensation King Clarence to curate a one-off menu for Southbank’s Miss Pearl. Think yellowfin tuna with fermented chilli and smoked oysters ($26), 14-day aged duck with shiitake and muntries ($52) and a sourdough lamington with river mint and puffed rice. Pair with the ‘conservation’ gin, mango and chilli cocktail ($23) for the ultimate experience.
140 Southbank Blvd, Southbank
5. Brewmanity’s Sip and Sweat
Footy superstar David Neitz is more of a “sipper than a sweater” these days— but you’ll see him do both at Brewmanity’s Sip and Sweat event. At the fitness meets beer swilling class, you’ll sweat out a 45-minute mat pilates session followed by two-hours of eating and drinking at Neitz’s new South Melbourne brew-pub. ‘Boozy smoothies’ made with beer (no milk, it’s ok) include the ‘Little Tart’ made with sour Berliner weisse, limoncello and vodka, ‘Berry Boost’ of vodka and summer berries, and ‘Green Goddess’ with spinach, kale and gin.
50 Tope St, South Melbourne
6. Autumn by Society
The city’s prettiest season is throwing a dinner party and you’re invited. Held on AEDMO Launch Night on May 15, the posh Society dinner proudly waves the local produce flag. Executive chef Luke Headon’s four-course dinner includes Port Phillip Bay scallops, Portland lobster, Gippsland beef and Yarra Valley raspberries. $220 package includes food, wine, live entertainment and take home goodie bag.

7. Louey’s lasagne
Secret’s out. Louey’s, the wacky Italian-American disco diner at St Kilda’s The Espy Hotel, is dishing up a mega off-menu lasagne ($30) next month. Australian Venue Co executive chef Telina Menzies’ 30-layer monster is equal layers of pork and veal, bechamel and spicy n’duja red sauce. Ask your waiter for a secret serve or order it the boring old way (when it’s listed on the menu) in winter.
11 The Esplanade, St Kilda
8. Cutler and Co’s seafood dinner
Andrew McConnell’s fancy Fitzroy diner is throwing a seafood-led degustation. The five-course feast ($180 per person) indulges in the spoils of the local seafood haul, with hot takes on the abalone katsu sando, Fraser Island spanner crab and wild nettle soup.
55/57 Gertrude St, Fitzroy
9. Lillian’s Ladies dinner
Gather the gals, pop the champagne. This one-off ladies dinner celebrates trailblazing women of Melbourne’s hospo scene, with each course prepared by five rising-star Society chefs: Saki Yamamoto, Jennifer Daeng, Allyiza Grace Macabali, Soumya Shetty and Cindy Tanori. Think salmon roe and scallop crumpets, spiced tuna tartare, grilled fillet beef with chimichurri and more. $130 package includes food, wine, live entertainment and take home gift bag.

10. Brae’s midweek free dinner
Farm-to-fork fine diner Brae is giving guests the chance to win back the price of their dining experience.
