Dita Von Teese chatted to us about her lipstick secrets while in Sydney to promote her new lingerie collection for Myer.
First, she primes the lips with powder. “I use a little bit of powder on the lips because the colour really grabs onto a nice, dry, powdered surface,” she explains. “Then I always line the entire lip with a lip liner, because the lipstick holds onto that. A matt lipstick is a great choice if you really want the staying power.”
Von Teese says the secret is the way she reapplies: “I always, throughout the day, take my lipstick off and start over. I wipe it off and exfoliate with a clean cloth so that it looks fresh and feels fresh.”

“Every day my routine is: I have lunch, I wipe off my lipstick. Then I brush my teeth and I give a good scrub.”
“I think you have to. You can’t just keep applying it. That’s one of the things I love about lipstick, is that there’s a little bit of discipline involved in it.”
Von Teese is known for her iconic old Hollywood glamour beauty look, which includes a statement red lip. She says maintaining the same beauty look for some time has its advantages: “Practice makes perfect. I don’t need a ‘glam squad’ to get me ready for red carpets, I like having that alone time to get ready and I feel accomplished that I can do it on my own.”
Von Teese says she can do her own, full red carpet make-up, in less than 30 minutes, though the quickest she has ever done her make-up is 14 minutes.
Her tip for finding your own signature beauty look is to hone in on a specific feature, whether it be eyes or lips. “I usually say focus on that one thing you really want to learn how to do and make it a signature and do it every single day until you perfect it.”
“I love when I meet people and they have a signature, whether it’s a really extreme winged eye, or a really smoky eye, or a fuchsia lip, or an orange lip. I always tell people to experiment but try to focus on one thing and do it really well.”
