Women’s fashion has been catering to the larger-sized lady for a few years now but people are only just starting to realise that men’s fashion has the same needs.

For too long, guys have been limited to inflexible style options on the high street that don’t carry over to suit all shapes and sizes. Consequently, for those with a little extra meat on their bones, it can be hard to find flattering wardrobe options.

A great wardrobe will present your body in the most flattering way possible. Regardless of size, your clothes should offer a clean, clear and defined shape to the body. It’s no surprise then that fit plays a huge part in big man’s dressing, a long with pattern, fabric and accessories.

Tailoring

‘A great-fitting suit maketh the man’ – so should read the epitaph of men everywhere. Regardless of size, tailoring is imperative and having a professional fit a suit for you is the best option. Don’t go for turn-ups on your trousers as this will only shorten the legs and break up the vertical line.

Accessories

Accessories are your friend as long as they are done correctly. Look towards glasses, scarves, watches and a hat that are larger than your average to keep them in proportion to your body.

Layering

When done correctly, layering can narrow a silhouette. Opt for lighter colours underneath dark outer colours to brighten up an outfit for a clearer vertical line down the torso.

Keep It Simple

Keep bright patterns and colours to a minimum. Solid neutrals or dark colours are great but if you want to rock a pattern, think of light stripes, paisley or subtle dots.

Vertical Stripes

When wearing stripes, always go vertical – these are slimming and will elongate the body.

Lighter Materials

Lighter cotton materials are best suited for larger men as anything heavy or thick will give your shape a bulky outline. When dressing for colder months, still go for these materials but layer your pieces.
