Breakssert: Melbourne’s new meal mash up

THIS Melbourne cafe is answering our childhood prayers with a new meal mashup. But would you eat it?

FIRST there was brunch, followed by the uncommon brinner — now one Melbourne cafe is creating a new food movement to satisfy our morning sweet tooth.

Breakssert is a creative meal mash up between breakfast and dessert, coined by White Mojo.

The cafe, with stores in the CBD, Balwyn and now Glen Waverly, also created the Melbourne’s famed black latte.

White Mojo owner Samsky Yeung said like brunch (breakfast/lunch) and less commonly brinner (breakfast/dinner), the new Instagram-worthy dishes would take over the city.

“Dessert is usually the last meal you eat for the day and it’s usually a small portion,” he said.

“We’ve started serving it as the first meal of the day.”

Mr Yeung argued the vibrant coloured, carefully plated creations were the best way to start the day, despite their sweet ingredients.

“You do need some sugar for energy in the morning,” he said.
“You will have sugars in the dish — with fresh and macerated raspberries — but they have no added sugar. They’re natural sugars.”

His latest menu additions have been created with a new Instagram hashtag #breakssert.
“One third of our menu items are breakssert,” he said.
Sweet and Sour Waffles, French Brioche Toast and Buttermilk Strawberry Pancakes have been added to the menu in the last three weeks.
“Most of us eat toast, eggs and bacon and avocado for breakfast. We eat that Monday to Friday, so on the weekend people want something different,” he said.
