BRITISH celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal is officially on top Down Under.
Blumenthal’s first permanent restaurant outside the UK — Dinner — has taken out the number one spot in the inaugural delicious.100.
It is Victoria’s first — and only — ranked guide to the state’s top 100 restaurants.
The delicious.100 has been compiled by the Sunday Herald Sun’s three food reviewers — Dan Stock, Megan Miller and Simon Plant — who travelled thousands of kilometres across Victoria to eat more than 1000 dishes at hundreds of eateries.
Each restaurant was judged on its food offering, drinks and service, while also taking into consideration value and the buzz, fun and enjoyment known as the X factor.
Taking historical British recipes and reinterpreting them for a modern audience, Blumenthal’s restaurant was judged the complete package — innovative, exciting and delicious food, engaging service that welcomes all and a dining room that’s as elegant and opulent as it is comfortable.
Every inclusion on the delicious.100 list is one the Sunday Herald Sun thinks is worthy of your time, money and a visit.
While the top 10 restaurants are innovative, world-class offerings, the list also features many offering great value dining, excellent casual options or family-friendly fare.
Geoff Lindsay’s five-year-old mod-Vietnamese restaurant Dandelion at Elwood made the cut and also took out the gong for best family restaurant.
“As a chef and restaurateur who has worked in the industry for more that 30 years, the dining scene in Victoria has never been better and it is an honour to be acknowledged at this level,” he said.
It’s not just inner Melbourne that’s eating well.
Top restaurants are increasingly being found in suburbs such as Heidelberg, Warrandyte and Beaconsfield.
A quarter of the list features country hotspots from regional Victoria and a third of the top 20 were from outside greater Melbourne.
