Children’s court hears teen thug broke victim’s nose in brutal gang attack in West Footscray

A girl who at age 15 viciously attacked two West Footscray workers, injuring one so badly she has not worked in two years, will likely avoid a criminal record.

The court heard one of the girl’s victims had not returned to work almost two years after the attack.

A teenage girl who broke the nose of a woman who told her and her friends to “quiet down” outside a West Footscray accounting firm had fallen in with the wrong crowd, a court has heard.

The girl, who cannot be named, was 15 years old when she and a group of friends viciously bashed the woman and one of her male colleagues on Barkly St, breaking her nose and causing significant facial injuries to both workers.

The victims were taken to hospital at the time, with the woman needing surgery to reset her nose and repair a suspected broken cheekbone.

Now 17, the girl this week fronted a children’s court where she pleaded guilty over the attack.

She also pleaded guilty to shoplifting two pairs of Nike and Adidas trackies — worth $140 — from Rebel Sport at Pacific Werribee earlier that year.

The court heard the female victim had been traumatised and had not returned to work almost two years after the attack, while the man now suffers from anxiety.

The young girl was captured on video kicking and slapping the victims while they shield their heads from the attack.

Her defence lawyer said his client had “separated herself from that group of friends” and turned her life around.

“She has gone back to school … and she has clear goals,” he said.

What happens in a criminal trial?

“This was a case of peer group offender, there was no substance abuse involved, she was associating with a negative peer group but has stopped hanging around with them.”

Magistrate Urfa Masood placed the girl in a diversion program, accepting her lawyer’s advice that his client was remorseful and had not been in trouble with the law since the incident.

“You are now 17 years old, you’re in Year 12 at school, you’ve not come into contact with police or the justice system since this offending has occurred,” she said.

If the girl successfully completes the eight-week diversion program, she will avoid a criminal record.
