Wyndham’s sport offering is set to get a whole lot better with the addition of a new multi million-dollar training hub in Tarneit.
The $25 million training facility will include three pitches, two grass and one synthetic, and comes in addition to the new 15,000 seat Wyndham City Stadium planned for Sayers Rd.
Wyndham Mayor Josh Gilligan said the hub, which will be jointly paid for by the council and the Western Melbourne Group, would be used by Western United Football Club, rugby league, rugby union and other sports.
Members of the public would have primary access to the synthetic ground, he said.
And Cr Gilligan said big infrastructure projects such as the hub and Wyndham City Stadium would be key to creating jobs and ensuring the municipality’s economy bounced back after the pandemic.
“It will include a main grass pitch with 5000 seats, which will be used by Western United and their associated teams including W-League and girls and boys academy teams,” Cr Gilligan said.
“Despite COVID-19, we’re getting on with the job to turn Wyndham into a destination city, a place that attracts sports lovers, families, businesses and visitors.”
Kate Roffey, the council’s director of deals, investments and major projects, said the announcement was a win for Wyndham.
“The whole journey we have been on with Western Melbourne Group, bidding for a new licence for our own team in the west, developing plans to build our own stadium and elite training facility, seeing our team making the A-League finals in their inaugural season, is inspiring for Wyndham and the west.”
Western United chairman Jason Sourasis said the new sport precinct would give children the ability to train near their A-league heroes and a pathway for juniors hoping to one day enter the senior competition.
Construction on the new sport precinct will begin early next year and is expected to finish by early 2023.
