Detectives are appealing for public assistance after a man threatened two people with a handgun in a West Footscray apartment building.

It’s believed the man, wearing a distinctive red jumper, followed the pair into the underground parking structure on Roberts Rd about 8.50pm on May 16.

He allegedly drew a handgun from his waistband, pointing the firearm at a man and woman, aged in their 20s, who were attempting to park a car.

Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit First Constable Hayden Bennett said the couple were “threatened” during the incident, but were fortunately able to escape unharmed.

“He ran in after them and produced what appears to be a small handgun,” he said.

“The driver managed to turn around … and drove out of the complex, breaking through the gate.”

First Constable Bennett said the two victims were “very shaken up” by the incident and were concerned about their safety.

“The footage is quite confronting, at this stage it looks like he was waiting outside for someone to go in there. It’s lucky no one got hurt.”

He said police were yet to determine the man’s intentions during the “distressing incident” and said it would be investigated thoroughly.”

“Obviously any incidents involving firearms is a massive concern to us and we’re investigating as thoroughly as we can,” he said.

On Monday, detectives released CCTV of the distressing incident, asking for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

The offender is perceived to be Caucasian, in his late 40s with brown and grey hair.
