VTCA: Point Cook’s Harman Bedi lifts his side to surprise T20 win

A former Canadian junior international struck a half-century before combining with his fellow spinner to spark a major upset win for Point Cook.

Harman Bedi is giving Point Cook more than they had hoped for.

The 21-year-old all-rounder put together arguably his best performance of the season to lift Point Cook into the final four of the VTCA’s T20 competition on Tuesday night.

Bedi, who represented Canada at the Under 19 World Cup in 2020, scored an unbeaten 50 and took 3-13 with his off-spinners to guide his side to a 17-run win over Sydenham-Hillside.

The division 3 Warriors had entered the game as underdogs with the home side currently sitting top of the division 2 McNamara Shield.

But Bedi’s performance inspired his teammates according to club president Adrian Farrier.

“He’s a very good player who is getting better with every game,” he said.

“Harman came to us as an associate of our new coach Hari Krishan at the start of the season. He spent some time with Essendon’s second XI in the Premier competition last season so we were thrilled when he arrived.

“He’s been a good recruit in terms of his cricket but he’s an even better person.

“I thought his innings on Tuesday was impressive because he maintained a good tempo and was aggressive when we needed to be.

“We knew 120 should be competitive given the conditions and he helped us to push us towards that target.”

Bedi formed a stunning partnership with fellow spinner Jatinder Singh who finished with 3-16.

The pair’s combined six wickets helped spark a Sydenham-Hillside collapse as the hosts lost their last eight wickets for 25 runs to be all out for 106.

“Those boys were key to getting us across the line,” Farrier said.

“Jatinder is a player who had been around our second XI for a while but has really taken his opportunity since coming into the first team.”

Farrier also credited his side’s efforts in the field with Max Rouvray taking an “amazing catch” in the outfield to remove Ben Green, the home side’s skipper.

Gurbaksh Khaira was in everything finishing with two run outs.
