VSDCA: Williamstown sign Premier Cricket all-rounder Jack Craig

VSDCA club Williamstown is hopeful its latest signing, an all-rounder with Premier Cricket experience, can help “replace” a player it lost before last season.

Williamstown is hopeful its latest signing can help spin the club to a first finals appearance in three seasons.

The Victoria Sub-District Cricket Association club has announced the arrival of Jack Craig, a top order batter who bowls off-spin, ahead of the 2022-23 season.

Craig joins the western suburbs club after a season where he spent time with Melbourne in Victorian Premier Cricket before returning home to Wodonga in the back half of the season.

He played four games in Melbourne’s First XI before going onto score 200 runs at an average of 33.33 for Wodonga in seven matches.

His brief stint back home also included eight wickets as his side fell short in the preliminary final.

Williamstown secretary Jordan Doyle said Craig was already known to the coaching staff having trained with the group throughout the past year.

“He knows our captain-coach Sean Sturrock from their time together in Premier Cricket,” Doyle said.

“Jack has trained with us during the season before he returned home to Wodonga to play on weekends. He got to know the boys and has got along with them really well.

“When we lost our former captain, Brent McMinn, we didn’t really replace him in terms of a number three batter and spinner.

“We’re confident Jack is going to be able to fill that role for us.”

Williamstown is still going through its recruiting process and is hopeful of signing “one more” player before the start of the season.

Although the club hasn’t lost any players from its first or second XIs from last season.

“We’ve had a few meeting but not all of those have obviously worked out,” Doyle said.

“Our squad is still looking strong and we’re hopeful of pushing for a place in the finals next season.”

Next season, Williamstown will compete in the East/West division.

“We’re looking forward to playing against some different sides — that’s the beauty of this competition,” Doyle said.

“We don’t want to have our feet up in March, we want to be there when the whips are cracking.”
