Werribee’s status as one of the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association’s powerhouse clubs continue to grow.

After the end of the home and away season at the weekend, the Tigers were awarded the Ken Fewster Club Championship.

The award was handed down to the club after it’s first and fourth XIs finished second on the ladder in their respective competitions.

Meanwhile, the second and third XIs finished first ahead of finals action starting this coming weekend.

First XI captain Tim O’Brien said the success came from the entire club’s determination to “build on the success of previous years”.

“The Club Championship shows the strength of the club from top to bottom,” he said.

“Throughout all the grades of cricket this season which has meant there has been some really strong competition for places in the teams.

“Having that foundation has really helped us to get where we are at the moment.

“But everyone is looking forward to the challenge of finals cricket this weekend.”

Werribee’s first XI will welcome Oakleigh to Chirnside Park on Saturday, a side they got the better of just three weeks ago.

“Everyone is going to have to contribute with bat and ball if we want to win this game,” O’Brien said.

“Oakleigh are a strong team and as we’ve seen throughout the season, any of the top six sides are capable of beating one another.”

Jacob Knight, who has spent time in the under 18s and lower senior grades, has the most runs of any Werribee player this season with 477 runs from 19 innings.

His highest score was an unbeaten knock of 101 not out against Hoppers Crossing in the third XI which he scored last month.

Jack Gage (402 runs at 36.55) and Nathan Taylor (396 runs at 33) round out the club’s top three.

Joy Patel has taken the most wickets of any player this season with 31 at an average of 15.72 spending time in the senior and junior teams.
