A Point Cook abattoir worker stabbed her former housemate in the hand after an argument over a bin, a court has heard.
Canab Xaaxshi, 24, was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order after pleading guilty to one charge of recklessly causing serious injury in Melbourne County Court last week.
The court heard Xaashi attacked her former housemate when she was living in Stawell in December last year.
The pair had been lived together for several years when they got into a physical scuffle, slapping one another, after their male housemate moved a bin.
The bin had been used to mix orange juice outside but Xaashi bought it back inside into her room.
The court heard it had been moved because Xaashi said she put her housemate’s clothes in the bin.
Xaashi told her victim she would end up in hospital if she tried to get it.
The pair had to be separated by the male housemate.
A short time later, the victim went into Xaashi’s bedroom to collect some of her belongings causing another fight to break out.
Xaashi then grabbed a large kitchen knife and walked into the living room, concealing the weapon in her headscarf.
She eventually produced the knife and started waving it around before lunging at her housemate and pointing it at her stomach.
The victim was able to wiggle free before Xaashi lunged at her for a second time – putting her hands in front of her stomach to protect herself, grabbing the blade of the knife.
Xaashi moved it back and forwards causing a deep laceration to the victim’s thumb, an injury which required surgery.
Police were called to the scene where Xaashi was arrested.
In a victim impact statement, Xaashi’s former housemate said she was forced to stay with a friend in Melbourne while she recovered from her injuries.
Judge Elizabeth Gaynor described the offending as “out of character” for Xaashi which occurred in a “unique set of circumstances”.
She said Xaashi had improved her situation by moving to Point Cook with her sister where she works in an abattoir.
No conviction was recorded.
