About 100 people have been evacuated from a store in Melbourne’s west on Wednesday afternoon after shoppers noticed smoke spreading throughout the aisles.
Emergency services were called to Pacific Werribee on Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing just before 4pm after reports smoke had escaped from the plant room at Big W.
Witnesses say about 100 shoppers were evacuated as a precaution but there were no reported injuries.
It comes after a suspicious fire tore through a cafe in Melbourne’s west prompting an investigation by the arson squad, and just a day after another shopping centre in the west was locked down after a machete was used in a fight between two groups of youths.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman said crews arrived within five minutes and worked to clear to smoke.
“The situation was under control shortly afterwards and crews remained to ensure the scene was safe,” the FRV spokesman said.
He said a compressor had leaked oil from an airconditioning unit and filled the store with smoke.
